In order to come to the proper teaching of and a deeper personal understanding of the Gospels, this website provides a "translation" of St Thomas Aquinas' Catena Aurea (Golden Chain) to an English that is more easily digestible for the modern reader in addition to increased context to the commentaries. Though still quite long, a reading of a few commentaries will go a long way to enhance the understanding of the Gospel.
The teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas, also known as the Common Doctor, were adopted as the standard for the entire Church. Unlike other Doctors of the Church who specialize in certain areas, Aquinas's work is seen as a comprehensive, universal guide to the faith.
The Catena Aurea, or Golden Chain in English, is a commentary of the four Gospels compiled by St. Thomas Aquinas from the works of the Church Fathers and other known Biblical commentators. In this work, St. Thomas Aquinas created a continuous commentary on the Gospels by weaving together the interpretations of early Church Fathers, much like a chain of gold. This compilation provided a comprehensive and authoritative resource for understanding the Gospels, making the wisdom of diverse theological traditions accessible to the entire Church and cementing Aquinas's role as a master synthesizer of Catholic thought.
